Insomnia Defined
So what exactly is insomnia? It is sometimes defined as a sleeping disorder and is characterized by one’s inability to fall asleep or, in some instances, to remain asleep for a reasonable period of time. There are three main types of insomnia; transient, acute, and chronic. Transient insomnia lasts anywhere from a single night to as much as a few weeks. Acute insomnia can be defined as the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of between three weeks up to six months, while chronic insomnia, being the most serious of all, persists almost every night for at least a month.
Realistically, insomnia could also be defined as a symptom and not necessarily a disorder. We can state this because once the underlying problem causing the insomnia is eliminated, the condition itself will subside and one’s natural sleep patterns will return. Insomnia Symptoms
The main symptoms of insomnia are having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep once you do. Additional common symptoms are Waking up frequently during the night, Waking up too early or waking up feeling tired or unrefreshed. These are many other subtle symptoms associated with insomnia. All of these symptoms have underlying causes and we will address some of the more frequent ones now.
Insomnia Causes
There are numerous causes of insomnia with most falling into one of the following areas; physical, mental or emotional. Physical causes of insomnia could be listed as pain, side effects from drugs or stimulants, and could include certain medical conditions, such as hyperthyroidism. Mental causes of insomnia could include depression, bipolar disorder or general anxiety disorder as well as numerous other diagnosed mental illnesses. Some emotional causes to consider could be fear, emotional or mental tension, work problems, financial stress or worry about an event either in the past, present or future. Just as there are many causes of insomnia, you will also find many cures. We have included some of these cures below to give you some examples.

As with all other common ailments and conditions affecting a majority of people in their lifetime, we find that there are many cures readily available depending on who or where you ask. The medical community has their solutions such as the numerous prescription drugs available, while the over-the counter brands expound their inexpensive and quick solutions as well. The alternative medicine field has many cures for the condition, and do provide a more safe and natural approach. One could also try other non-medicinal cures as well, ranging from cognitive behavior therapy, to meditation, brain entrainment, hypnosis and even aromatherapy. As you can see, the supply of cures can be endless and each person may find relief from something entirely different than the next person.
